Brisbane, Queenslands capital city, is set on the banks of the
meandering Brisbane River and is a laidback city for which it has long
suffered the tag of 'Big Country Town' by its southern
cousins.
The city centre focuses around the city mall (Queen
Street Mall), which runs north to south of the central business district
(CBD) and is the cities main retail shopping area. Brisbane is an
easy city to discover with the City Cat Ferry running hourly up and down the river. Catching the ferry is not only
a great way to get around but also a nice way to see
some of the beautiful old Queenslander houses that line the
river.
Brisbane's 'alternative' screen is in Fortitude Valley or The Valley to locals. Only ten minutes north of
the CBD, the Valley is a great place to eat, catch a band,
go to a dance club or if you want, strip
club.
South Bank Parklands at the southern end of town is assessable via the
Melbourne Street Bridge opposite the Casino. Incorporating the Qld
Performing Arts Complex, Qld Museum, State Library, Qld Art Gallery, a man-made
beach and 17 hectares of gardens and restaurants, South Bank is good for a bit
of culture or a relaxing walk along the river. |
